All That You Can't Leave Behind

it just amazes me how much we take for granted now-a-days. i mean it wasn't that long ago that the radio was first invented and think of how much it brought people together! i think the movie said something like... "it narrowed the distance from coast to coast!" it was an instrument of togetherness and family. it was new. it was in. it was taking america by storm.

and now: nothing. it's on in the background as we type away at our computers (unless of course you're streaming live from Pandora  or some other page on the internet... or you have an ipod), we turn it up to block out the honking in our cars, but never do we thank God anytime we turn it on. it's only a filler.

but then, the television stocked the shelves practically overnight back then, and the radio was left in the dust. everything you had been so attached to, all those soothing voices you heard- you could see them now. they were people, with faces, and names, and clothing... just like you. it opened up a whole new world of entertainment!

and now: nothing. it's on in the background as we cook our evening dinners, we turn it on to help us procrastinate writing our papers and studying for tests, but never do we reminiscence about the old days when it was only black and white, awful sound, antenna driven.

i think technology has come a loooooong way in the past 100 or so years, and it has drastically changed society and cultures. i'm not ashamed to say i'm a bit nervous about the next few years with all the recently developing interactive technology!!
