"some people walk in the rain, others just get wet"
but in clockwork orange. they were just getting wet. there was so much violence in what they were doing, it was hardly a love song anymore! in visual literacy, we talked about how images, music, and artwork can be taken out of their original context and therefore, mean completely different things. when gene kelly was singing the song, it was magical, IT WAS RAINING, and it was a love song. when the guy from clockwork orange was singing it, he was passing the time. it made it seem like the had done this so many times before. it was a filler. an insult.
now i'm no expert, but the culture at the time and place of the movie most definitely have an impact on what goes on on the big screen. most people would say that the movies reflect society... then others would say that society just copies what's in the movies. well, then that brings us full circle folks. but in those times, things were a little different. the 50's was calm and not a whole lot of change was going on, but in the 60's and 70's.... whoa! there was all kinds of messed up stuff--mainly drugs! so therefore, the movie was mimicking society.
i don't think that music should be taken out of context, that hinders the true meaning and interpretation.
